He joined the ODU Civil and Environmental Engineering Department in May 2013 and became part of the Biofuels Laboratory Team. His main research activities are centered on energy recovery from biomass. He had been actively associated with direct combustion of biomass for energy recovery for several years, and he further extended his research area to an innovative field of Thermal Treatment of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) to produce biofuels. His research contribution advanced the fact that pyrolysis and gasification of municipal solid waste is more environmental friendly than incineration and produces more useful products and the energy produced is eligible for incentives as renewables.
Mr. Mehrotra received his M.S. in Environmental Engineering from ODU in May 2015. His research concentration focused on heat and energy recovery from municipal sewage sludge. His findings extended to both biological and anaerobic digestion (AD) energy recovery processes and their life cycle assessments. The study also included new concepts on recovery of phosphorous from the treated sludges. In his more recent study he consolidated the treatment and conservation technologies for sustainable use of fibrous natural resources like bamboo biomass, highlighting the most productive and environmentally friendly method of its treatment for industrial, residential, and commercial usage.
Mr. Anil Mehrotra completed ODU’s Advanced Engineering Certificate in Energy Systems during Spring Semester, 2015, making him the first graduate of this recently introduced Certificate program. Dr. Sandeep Kumar, Director of ODU’s Energy Engineering Research Cluster presented him with his Certificate on July 31st, 2015. Currently Mr. Mehrotra is pursuing his Doctoral degree in Engineering at ODU and is working as a Research Associate with ODU Research Foundation on an industrial sponsored project for stabilization of toxic heavy metals in MSW combustion residues.
